Packing Essentials for Summer: Outfit Options

Some readers have asked me to put together outfit options for summer like I did for Fall and Spring. I’m more than happy to oblige and I apologize for the delay, this summer has been a busy one. This will still come in handy for anyone lucky enough to be traveling to the southern hemisphere like South America or Australia.

I’m pulling the outfits from the 11 piece capsule summer wardrobe I’ve already put together. The pieces are: 1 light jacket, 1 light sweater or other coverup layer, 1 Blouse/Button Down, 2 sleeveless tops, 2 tees/tops, 2 bottoms, 1 day and 1 evening dress. For the purposes of this illustration I’ve also included outfits for the optional shorts in case you bring shorts instead of jeans.

As always you want your airplane outfit to be comfortable. Layers are still important in the summer because even though your destination may be hot the airplane can still get cold. I included jeans in my Summer packing list but if your destination is REALLY hot or humid don’t bring them, pack a skirt instead.

Of course you can stick to classic neutrals such as khaki, black, and gray in your color palette but I like a little more color in the summer. I added splashes of blue, coral, and army green to the neutral palette. A smart little day dress will get you through any day of sightseeing comfortably. Mix and match your other pieces for lots of other outfit options.

How to Pack for Summer Travel

Even though I feel summer travel is inherently more casual you might need to dress up a bit. In that case, a fabulous maxi dress and wedges will serve you well. Wedges can still be comfortable so I don’t mind packing them on my summer trips (just don’t rely on them as your main sightseeing shoe). I’ve included other dressy casual options if you want to look a little more put together during your summer travels. Remember sometimes just a change of accessories such as a cute clutch or fun jewelry can extend your outfit from day to night.

Summer Packing Essentials

Cheers and Happy Packing! Please do keep the questions coming, it may take me a while to respond but I do read every comment and email and am happy to help you with packing dilemmas.

I need some advice for a 28 day trip to Spain, South of France and Italy this summer. I plan on bringing Black capri leggings, Black skirt that converts to dress, Black bermuda shorts, Khaki Anatomie skinny pants, tan knit skirt, and 1 dress. Tops include a couple tanks and tunics in cream, black, teal, crimson, maybe rust? Should I go with black sandals and flats or brown sandals and flats? I also plan on bringing gold sandals to dress up a bit.
    Thanks! Any advice is apreciated

    Hi!

I’m wondering where that gold 3 layer necklace is from and the navy and coral necklace? Also, the light grey shirt?

    Thanks!

šŸ‘ PACK IT IN A POUCH | First Aid

Don’t buy a pre-made travel first-aid kit. Build one around you and what you’re actually likely to need.

Mine has evolved after years of travel and a few lessons learned the hard way: Stomach issues in Oaxaca, painful sinus pressure on a flight, blisters from long walking days and even a stye on one trip. 😬

And you don’t need a fancy organizer. A Ziploc bag works just fine. The goal is to have the things you might need when you’re away from home.

Want to build your own? Comment POUCH and I’ll send you my First Aid planner + links to the first-aid essentials I pack.

Save this for your next trip and tell me what’s in your first-aid pouch that I’m missing. šŸ‘‡

No more digging through your personal item at 35,000 feet.
Everything I want during the flight lives in one small pouch, from takeoff to landing. (I forgot to mention in the video the oh so important lip balm!). It’s one of those tiny travel systems that makes a big difference.

This is the first in my šŸ‘Pack It in a Pouchāœˆļø series, where I’m breaking down my personal pouch system for travel, one pouch at a time.
Do you use an in-flight pouch? Tell me what goes in yours! šŸ‘āœˆļø

Save this for your next trip and follow along because next up in Pack It in a Pouch: the tech pouch. šŸ”Œ

After 25 years of traveling carry-on only, I’ve realized that some of my favorite travel habits aren’t just practical... they’re kind of chic.

They’re the little choices that make travel feel lighter, easier, and a little more effortless.

I’m loving this trend! What do you think is ā€œkinda chicā€ ? ✨

āš“ļøCruises can feel like five different trips rolled into one.

You’re packing for port days, sea days, pool time, dinners onboard, excursions, and sometimes multiple countries with completely different vibes.

It’s no wonder so many people end up bringing multiple suitcases.

My approach is different.
Rather than building separate wardrobes for every part of the trip, I start with a smaller core capsule and add a Cruise Mini Capsule with only the activity-specific pieces I actually need. The result is one carry-on that can handle the entire itinerary.

āš“ļøCruises can feel like five different trips rolled into one.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned after 25+ years of carry-on travel is that not every travel ā€œessentialā€ is actually essential.

Travel products are personal.
What works beautifully for one traveler may not work at all for another.

The goal isn’t to buy everything influencers recommend.
The goal is to find the systems and products that make your trips easier each time you travel.

And sometimes, that means skipping a few things people swear by.

✨ Comment ESSENTIALS if you’d like my list of the small products and systems I do pack again and again.

After 25 years of carry-on travel and many trips to Europe, these are the small systems and products I find myself packing again and again.

Not because everyone needs every single item on this list.

But because these are the little things that make packing lighter, staying organized, and navigating long travel days easier.

Some are practical.
Some are a little random.
Some are surprisingly useful.
Take what works for you. Leave what doesn’t.

āœˆļø Save this for your next trip.
And if you’d like the complete list of products and links, comment:

Despite surviving Texas summers, hot-weather travel has still humbled me.

From 10 days in Havana in July to heat waves in Mexico and some of my hottest sightseeing days in Paris, I’ve learned that packing for extreme heat is different.

The hottest travel days changed the way I build summer capsules:
ā˜€ļø More dressesā€Øā˜€ļø More technical fabricsā€Øā˜€ļø More breathable natural fibersā€Øā˜€ļø Fewer heavy fabrics and fitted silhouettes
This is the exact dress-forward capsule I’d pack for extreme heat travel in Europe.

It’s also why I rely on my 4 F’s framework: Fit, Fabric, Function, and Fashion.
Every trip requires a different balance. For extreme heat, the continuum naturally shifts, with fabric and function becoming more important while still leaving room for personal style.
