Best summer travel sandals for europe

Europe travel sandals

Table of Contents

When choosing the best summer travel sandals for Europe, comfort can’t take a back seat to style. I just returned from a 12‑day trip where I averaged 10,000–20,000 steps a day, so I know firsthand how crucial the right shoe is for any travel capsule wardrobe. From Lisbon’s pastel‑washed hills to weaving through Paris’s arrondissements, I saw one style everywhere: Birkenstock’s Arizona style sandal. Tourists and locals alike couldn’t get enough of them.

Europe travel sandal

I’ve been a Birkenstock fan since high school, I get the appeal (I own 3 pairs currently). They’re comfortable and chic, but for on‑the‑go European travel (sprinting for trains, scaling metro stairs, navigating slick cobblestones), the classic Arizona just wouldn’t cut it for me. I would never recommend a slide style sandal, I need more ankle support, more cushioning, and a grippier sole.

European adventures demand 10K–20K steps a day, and nothing derails a trip faster than sore feet. In this guide, you’ll discover why your summer sandals and a trusty sneaker must deliver on comfort, style, and stability.

I’ll show you how to choose summer sandals for Europe that work as hard as you do, whether you’re sipping an Aperol Spritz in Lisbon or people‑watching at a Parisian café. And let me add this caveat, shoe choice is intensely personal. What works for you may not work for me and vice versa. For example, the Dr. Scholl’s Time Off sneaker I  feel like is universally recommended as a travel sneaker. However, when I tested them out I found them heavy and clunky and could not see them as a 20K shoe, for me at least. Ultimately, you have to determine what travel sandal or travel shoe works best for you. I’ve tried to round up options that bridge comfort and cuteness. Let me know if I’ve succeeded!

Why Your European travel Sandals Matters

European travel demands shoes that can handle:

  1. Endless Steps: 10K–20K per day through cobblestones, museums, and metro stairs.

  2. Mixed Terrain: Uneven pavement, slick surfaces after rain, and occasional uphill climbs.

  3. Style Stakes: You still want to look polished in photos and dinner reservations.

A flimsy flip-flop or basic slide simply won’t cut it. Your sandal must strike the sweet spot between support and chic.

My travel Sandal Philosophy: Sneakers First, Sandals Second

I’ve learned that every great European adventure starts with the right shoe, what I call your “20K Shoe.” In my experiences traveling (thanks to my smartwatch) I can tell that I’m walking anywhere from 10-20K+ steps on travel days. So you must pack a shoe that can keep up with you, hence the 20K shoe.

This 20k shoes serves as your primary pair and your anchor: in my case it’s a supportive, neutral‑tone sneaker for cobblestone promenades, metro sprints, and museum marathons. (I recently had great success with the New Balance 237’s for  20k+ step days). Only after you’ve secured that foundation should you slot in a secondary sandal, something dressier for lighter walking days, aperitif hours, or evenings out.

Travelista in Paris

Fun fact: On my very first backpacking trip of 6 weeks with a 40 liter backpack in Europe I packed  a Doc Marten Mary Jane style because back in 1998, sneakers in Europe were considered a no-no! And honestly, looking back that was the beginning of me trying to find the intersection of comfort and style. And if you’re curious, the shoe worked out great!

If you prefer a sandal‑only approach, make it count. Look for adjustable straps, built‑in arch support, and a textured, non‑slip sole, features that keep you upright on Lisbon’s hills and steady on Paris’s slick pavements. In other words, treat your sandal like a mini “20K Shoe,” not a vacation afterthought.

What’s a Sandal City?

Not every destination is sandal-friendly. Big cities like Paris and Rome? You’ll want sneakers, always. Too many metro stairs, endless walking, and city grime make sandals impractical (and frankly uncomfortable). I save the sandals for low-volume walking days or for dressing up for dinner.

In smaller, slower-paced spots like Lisbon, Porto, or the South of France a cute, supportive sandal works beautifully as your primary shoe as well as for short strolls or dressier dinners. These destinations are what I call a “Sandal City” and well suited to a less functional footwear option. I personally wear sneakers 70–80% of the time, but I love having sandals for those lighter, scenic days or for my capsule outfit options in “sandal cities”. On my recent trip to Porto, I wore comfortable espadrille fisherman sandals that had a grippy tractioned sole.

How to Choose Your Perfect Summer Travel Sandal

The right sandal keeps you comfortable and chic through 10K–20K daily steps. Look for these must‑have features:

  • Ankle Support: Adjustable straps or back closures for a secure fit

  • Cushioned Footbed: Generous padding under heel and forefoot

  • Traction: Deep‑tread, non‑slip rubber soles for wet or uneven surfaces

  • Closed‑Toe Option: Protection for busy city streets or light hikes

  • Lightweight Construction: Sandals under 12 oz per foot to reduce fatigue

  • Minimal Break‑In Time: Ready to wear right out of the box

Materials matter as much as construction. For non-waterproof sandal options I recommend leather as it offers breathability, polish, and natural durability. Modern waterproof synthetics or coated textiles shrug off spring showers without feeling bulky. If you have chronic issues, like high arches or plantar fasciitis, seek out brands and styles that adress those issues. With these features dialed in, your sandals will be up for 10K–20K‑step days exploring Lisbon’s hills, people‑watching in Paris, or island‑hopping under the Mediterranean sun in comfort and style, all day long.

Footwear tips

Pro Tips
1. Walk-Test at Home
Wear your sandals on errands or short hikes weeks before departure.
2. Break Them In
A few hours of wear prevents Day-One hotspots.
3. Rotate Your Shoes
Alternate days in sandals and sneakers to let your feet recover.
4. Blister Kit Essentials
Pack moleskin, adhesive bandages, and antiseptic gel.

Building Your European summer travel Capsule Around Your Shoe

Your summer footwear isn’t an afterthought, it’s the cornerstone of your entire travel capsule. Whether it’s your reliable 20K‑step sneaker or a supportive, chic sandal, plan every outfit with that shoe in mind.

Start by choosing your primary walking shoe or sandal, then select tops, bottoms, and layers that complement its color, style, and level of formality. A neutral sandal, for example, can anchor everything from linen trousers to slip dresses, while a sport‑chic pair effortlessly balances with casual tees and skirts.

By building your European summer travel capsule around your shoes, you ensure every piece works in harmony, maximizing versatility, minimizing packing, and keeping your carry‑on lean and ready for any summer adventure.

Conclusion

Your summer in Europe deserves footwear that can do it all: walk all day, look polished come evening, and survive every weather curveball. Treat sandals as your stylish sidekick to a reliable sneaker, or choose your anchor shoe wisely if you choose sandals as your main pair. Follow my tips above and you’ll be set to conquer every piazza, promenade, and museum with happy feet.

Thank you for your posts, esp those with specific shopping recommendations.
Information is missing in the sandal chart. I’m interested in the #2 White Sole Sandal. But #2 link after White Sole Sandals is for a sandal in the Sport Sandal category. In the links section, there is no heading for Sport Sandals.

French-girl fall, four pieces, 14 ways. 🇫🇷🍂
I started with four Quince pieces I’d actually want in a fall travel wardrobe and kept restyling them: wide-leg jeans, a striped button-down, red cashmere and a classic trench.

Tucked, untucked, layered, tied at the waist, sweater over the shoulders…same four pieces, completely different feel.

And that red cashmere? Definitely the piece that makes the whole thing. ❤️

Paid partnership with @onequince #QuincePartner

I’ve linked all four pieces in my LTK Shop so you can shop them directly there. https://liketk.it/6n8ad

Or comment “FRENCH” and I’ll send you the links to all four pieces.

👝 PACK IT IN A POUCH | Wellness
This is the part of my pouch that’s less about first aid and more about feeling good while I travel.

Electrolytes, probiotics, ginger chews, anti-bloat products, vitamins, Lactaid and a few other things I’ve learned are worth having with me.

The goal isn’t to pack everything. It’s to build a wellness pouch around what you actually use and need when you travel.

Want to build yours? Comment POUCH and I’ll send you my Wellness Pouch Planner + Amazon links to the wellness items I pack.

👝 PACK IT IN A POUCH | First Aid

Don’t buy a pre-made travel first-aid kit. Build one around you and what you’re actually likely to need.

Mine has evolved after years of travel and a few lessons learned the hard way: Stomach issues in Oaxaca, painful sinus pressure on a flight, blisters from long walking days and even a stye on one trip. 😬

And you don’t need a fancy organizer. A Ziploc bag works just fine. The goal is to have the things you might need when you’re away from home.

Want to build your own? Comment POUCH and I’ll send you my First Aid planner + links to the first-aid essentials I pack.

Save this for your next trip and tell me what’s in your first-aid pouch that I’m missing. 👇

After 25 years of traveling carry-on only, I’ve realized that some of my favorite travel habits aren’t just practical... they’re kind of chic.

They’re the little choices that make travel feel lighter, easier, and a little more effortless.

I’m loving this trend! What do you think is “kinda chic” ? ✨

⚓️Cruises can feel like five different trips rolled into one.

You’re packing for port days, sea days, pool time, dinners onboard, excursions, and sometimes multiple countries with completely different vibes.

It’s no wonder so many people end up bringing multiple suitcases.

My approach is different.
Rather than building separate wardrobes for every part of the trip, I start with a smaller core capsule and add a Cruise Mini Capsule with only the activity-specific pieces I actually need. The result is one carry-on that can handle the entire itinerary.

⚓️ Comment “CRUISE” and I’ll send you:
• My free Europe cruise packing guide
• The complete Mediterranean Cruise Capsule on LTK
• My in-depth cruise packing article on Substack

Save this for your next Europe cruise. ✈️💗

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned after 25+ years of carry-on travel is that not every travel “essential” is actually essential.

Travel products are personal.
What works beautifully for one traveler may not work at all for another.

The goal isn’t to buy everything influencers recommend.
The goal is to find the systems and products that make your trips easier each time you travel.

And sometimes, that means skipping a few things people swear by.

✨ Comment ESSENTIALS if you’d like my list of the small products and systems I do pack again and again.
