SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE PACKING LIST

San Miguel de Allende Packing List

For over two decades, San Miguel de Allende has topped my travel wish list, and I’ve had the pleasure of visiting this enchanting city twice. After two visits I’m here to help you get packed for your trip to San Miguel de Allende. Perfect for a celebratory getaway—like my husband’s fall birthday and my own (which I’ll share about in a future post)—San Miguel never disappoints.

Here’s how you can plan your visit, starting with the essential packing tips. The key strategy that helped me plan a packing list for carry-on travel was a travel wardrobe capsule. My travel capsule wardrobe for this trip consisted of 12 clothing items and only two pairs of shoes.

I’ll provide some of my top packing tips based on my experience there so that you can fully enjoy your time in this magical city. This travel capsule wardrobe is based on what I packed for my first trip to San Miguel de Allende.

travel capsule wardrobe planning

Your packing list for San Miguel de Allende needs to account for the weather, your travel activities, your personal style and the cultural climate of the city. The first step to planning a travel capsule is to define the “Weather, Where and What?”.  What is the expected weather of your destination, consider the cultural considerations of where you are going and what will you be doing. The answers to these questions will guide your wardrobe choices.

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE WEATHER

Situated in the Bajia mountains of central Mexico, the weather has been described as “eternally spring” due to the high desert climate, an altitude of  6400 feet and low humidity. During the Fall and Winter the average high temperatures are in the 70’s during the day and the 40’s-50’s at night. Spring in San Miguel de Allende brings high temperatures in the 80’s. Expect rainy weather from June through September. The weather is part of the allure of San Miguel and a big reason why it’s drawn so many expats and visitors. This fluctuations in temperature require that you pack accordingly!

TRAVEL ACTIVITIES IN SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE

There’s no shortage of travel activities in San Miguel de Allende. Balloon rides, wine tastings, horseback riding, food tours, and spa days are just a few of the many activities available in San Miguel. Your travel activities will inform your packing list. If you are attending a wedding in San Miguel your packing list will reflect attire for the wedding and any associated activities.

Our travel activities were simple: we wanted to walk and wander around the city. The only activity we booked was a walking tour of the city which I highly recommend, especially for first time visitors like ourselves. Our tour was so informative and really laid the foundation of understanding and enjoying the city even more once we got insight into its history, architecture, culture and food.

CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS

San Miguel is a city of celebrations. There seems to always be a festival or parade or wedding happening. There’s music everywhere and fireworks at seemingly every hour. San Miguel is a major wedding destination and you will see dressed up wedding guests out and about. As part of a wedding celebration in San Miguel, you are likely to encounter a traditional callejoneada in the streets or in parks. The day before a wedding, couples parade along the streets with their family and friends accompanied by a Mariachi band and giant mojigangas—papier-mâché puppets towering 10 feet. Everyone usually dresses very colorfully for these celebrations.  If you happen upon one of these on the streets of San Miguel you are welcome to join the fun.

style considerations

When packing, I generally choose versatile clothing that transitions from day to night. For San Miguel, I included a mix of casual and dressy options. The city’s rooftop dining scenes often feature a vibrant, club-like atmosphere complete with DJs and fireworks, calling for at least one chic evening outfit. Let  your itinerary guide you here. I did pack a vibrant jumpsuit solely for going out to eat. I will mention that I never noticed a dress code for restaurants and outfits I observed at dinner ranged from casual to dressy to business casual.

On the style front, I researched the fashion vibe of the city to help me edit my packing list. If you look at social media accounts of people that have traveled to San Miguel it seems to have a kind of “bougie” vibe. I searched Instagram and tiktok for outfit inspiration and created a capsule that veered slightly away from my normally neutral palette and incorporated colorful items and patterned clothing items. In my experience the local style is a blend of casual, cosmopolitan, and slightly bohemian. The outfits I saw varied widely but mostly everyone looks put together and in many cases downright chic.

I also took a cue from the photos I saw online of the city. San Miguel de Allende has vibrant buildings and an overall colorful vibe. (I later learned that the city has a color palette of 13 colors.) This helped inform my color palette and vibe that I was going for when crafting my travel capsule. Since this was a shorter trip, I went for more patterns which limits the potential mix and match options but I felt like I had more than enough outfit options.

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE PACKING LIST

Now that you’ve taken into account the weather, your travel activities and your personal style and the cultural climate of the city we can get into the packing list. Download my free planner to help you organize your travel capsule for your trip. This travel capsule is best suited for Spring and Fall travel. A summer capsule will be upcoming on the blog.

comfortable shoes

Your San Miguel de Allende packing list must include comfortable shoes. San Miguel is made for walking and exploring. The cobblestone streets found throughout San Miguel de Allende provide much of its charm. However, that along with narrow sidewalks and steep hills make the right footwear imperative for enjoying this city. Comfortable shoes are a must due to the city’s cobblestone streets. Tennis shoes and comfortable shoes are widespread. Golden Goose tennis shoes and similar styles are popular among tourists.

The best shoes to pack for San Miguel de Allende would be sneakers and any shoe with a rubber sole. The style of the city leans toward casual and you won’t be out of place wearing comfortable, yet stylish, shoes.

Previous
Next

I packed only two pairs of shoes and those were my Karhu sneakers and Sorel ankle Chelsea boots. The Karhu sneakers are beyond comfortable and I love their chunkiness, I wore these mostly during the day. They could have been worn with anything in my capsule making them highly versatile. The black ankle boots I packed to wear at night for a more dressed up look. They are waterproof and have a nice lug sole and I could have easily worn them for daytime excursions. Had it been warmer I would have considered packing a pair of lightweight sandals as well.

lightweight jacket

I packed a field jacket, a light leather jacket and a puffy vest and all worked well. An advantage to a light jacket is that if you are carrying a backpack you can stow away that layer there and it won’t weigh you down. Also note that many restaurants are on rooftops or al fresco and not all of them have heat lamps and a jacket is essential.

Cool mornings and evenings require a light jacket, outer layer or sweater. Pack a lightweight jacket that won’t overheat you during the day when the temperatures warm and the sun is out. If you wear a jacket for daytime activities keep your other layers light. You will be walking around and it’s sunny most of the day so you won’t need to be bundled up. If you’re packing a Travelista 12 capsule, pack 2 lightweight jackets.

LIGHTWEIGHT SWEATER OR CARDIGAN

Don’t leave a lightweight sweater or cardigan off your San Miguel de Allende Packing List. This versatile layer that will keep you warm during those cool mountain evenings and mornings with temperatures in the 50’s. Cashmere and merino are ideal light knit layers but any fabrication will work as long as it’s not bulky. Layer these under jackets for maximum warmth.  A very lightweight fleece could be included during the colder months.

I’ll admit I was unprepared for how cold I would feel in the evenings and my cashmere sweater was indispensable. I layered it over my dress and under my leather jacket one evening and it easily combined with other items in my travel capsule. Most of the restaurants that we went to at night were outside and we weren’t always seated by a heat lamp so a sweater is an important layer to pack.

Dress/jumpsuit

Pack a versatile travel dress, skirt or jumpsuit that can easily take you from day to evening activities. I’m so glad that sneakers with dresses is a thing because it’s one of my travel go-to outfits. The photo opportunities are endless in San Miguel and I find that a dress, skirt or jumpsuit photograph well and are comfortable. If dresses aren’t your thing try a cute top and jeans combo or breezy pants.

I wore a patterned black dress for daytime with tennis shoes and field jacket and for dinner switched out the field jacket for a leather one and the tennis shoes for black ankle boots.

I also never would pack a jumpsuit for travel because its cumbersome but I thought it would be a fun nighttime outfit and its super lightweight and took up practically no room in my suitcase. I wore it with boots and leather jacket at night but in a pinch it would have worked with sneakers for a funky daytime look.

pants/jeans

You will want to include pants or jeans in your packing list. Any style as long as it is comfortable for you will work. I would advise you to stay away from leggings. I didn’t see them worn and that might be just a bit too casual.

Since it was a short trip I packed white jeans because they fit the vibe of my capsule best and felt they were a nice option to wear at night because they felt a little more dressed up than blue jeans. A printed maxi skirt is one of my favorite pieces in my everyday wardrobe and looks great with just about anything so I included it in my packing list.

If you are traveling there in  the summer, I would not recommend packing jeans. I would choose linen or lightweight pants or a skirt. (Look for a separate post next month on packing for the summer in San Miguel).

Tops

Needless to say you need to pack tops. Include a mix of short and long sleeve options in your packing list. I would vary between casual tee shirts and button downs and blouses.

I packed a short sleeve tee, long sleeve tee, blouse and a chambray button down. These items provided lots of mix and match outfit opportunities and I wore all of these at some point during the trip.

comfortable Airport outfit

There’s no direct flights into San Miguel de Allende, so that means you will generally fly into Mexico City or Del Bajío International Airport in Guanajato or Querétaro Intercontinental Airport in Querétaro then take a shuttle, bus or car into San Miguel. This extra travel leg can take anywhere from 90 minutes to several hours. That’s a lot of time in transit so I recommend including a comfortable airport outfit in your packing list. In general, if space allows I pack a mini capsule to wear in transit or at least a separate pair of pants to wear during travel days that are not included in my travel wardrobe capsule.

My airport outfit consisted of Lululemon joggers, sneakers, a gray tee-shirt, bandana, chambray shirt and field jacket. I like to wear multiple layers to deal with potential changes in temperature but it also frees up space in my suitcase. I felt comfortable during my flight from DFW into Querétaro and the subsequent 90 minute shuttle ride into San Miguel. Our AirBnb wasn’t ready when we arrived into town so we explored the nearby neighborhood and I still felt like my airport outfit, though casual, was appropriate.

Scarf

I always advise packing a pashmina style scarf when you travel. Not only is it stylish but it’s functional. A scarf is the perfect added layer for cool San Miguel mornings and evenings. It’s also lightweight and easy to throw in your tote or backpack once you warm up.

Would you believe that I forgot to pack my scarf?! If you’ve read my book, one of my tips is to pre-pack everything and I didn’t do that. We had an early morning flight and I thought I would remember to throw it in my carry on bag. So, pro-tip here, leave nothing to chance and pre-pack everything or make a phone or sticky note reminder of last minute items to grab before you leave. Fortunately, a scarf was a fun purchase to make in San Miguel and I found a gorgeously colorful scarf that I wouldn’t have bought otherwise and it was nice to have during the remainder of the trip.

hat

San Miguel is a hat town!! It is hands down THE most worn accessory. It’s helpful sun protection, especially at elevation, and can really add a fun touch to your travel outfit. If you pack a hat, I would advise a crushable or packable hat. This one from Amazon is tried and true for me and I wore it all through an extremely hot Texas summer.

The best way to travel with a hat is to wear it. However, if that’s not possible I would use a hat clip or place it in your personal carry-on and then place it on your head or lap during the flight. Never stow in the overhead bin because it could get crushed when luggage shifts in flight. The other option is to pack it inside your luggage which involves placing socks or other small soft items inside the brim and nesting it inside your luggage with the crown down.

I chose not to pack a hat and I regret it. Despite the many hat options throughout San Miguel I never found one that I loved enough to buy because I have so many I already love at home.

jewelry

Include jewelry in your packing list. Anything goes here  but San Miguel is an artsy town, so statement jewelry would fit right in. I packed some statement necklaces and found some gorgeous earrings that I wore for the remainder of the trip.

sunscreen

San Miguel is at over 6,000 feet of elevation which means the sun’s UV rays will be stronger. Protect your skin and include sunscreen in your packing list and apply throughout the day.

backpack/tote

A daypack backpack or tote helps you get through a day of sightseeing or going on excursions. We took a daypack to hold camera gear, water bottles, our kindles and snacks. It’s also helpful to stow away your lightweight layers that you shed during the day when the weather warms up. A large tote would do the job as well. San Miguel is a tourist town and a backpack wouldn’t be out of place here. We used my husband’s Osprey Nebula and it worked great. If you are taking any day trips to nearby cities like Guanjuato you will want to include a daypack on your list.

phone/camera

There’s photo opportunities at every turn in San Miguel de Allende. You will want a way to capture the charm of the city. Your phone camera or a film/digital camera is a “must pack” item.

portable phone charger & Tech

I always advise packing a portable phone charger on a trip. Your phone is one of the hardest working items during travel. It contains your maps, travel apps and all the practical information related to your stay. If you are like me you rely on your phone to take photos and videos and you don’t want to miss any photo opportunities.

A friendly reminder to add charging cables to your travel list. It might even be helpful to purchase a separate set of charging cables that are always packed and ready to go. I like to have a pouch or this grid to contain all the cords.

Travel size toiletries

Carry-on travel requires you to pack all liquid toiletries in a quart size bag. Pack travel sized containers or distill your required toiletries into smaller travel containers.

san miguel de allende travelista 12 travel capsule wardrobe

Use the travel capsule I packed as a template or as inspiration for your packing list. Choose travel clothing based on the weather and your specific travel activities. I packed 12 clothing items and 2 pairs of shoes. The only item in my mini-capsule was the jumpsuit I wore for my husbands birthday dinner.

  • 4 tops (chambray button down, white long sleeve, gray tee, printed blouse)
  • 3 bottoms (maxi skirt, similar maxi skirt, white jeans, joggers )
  • 2 mid layers (cashmere sweater, puffer vest)
  • 2 outer-layers (leather jacket, field jacket)
  • 1 dress
  • 2 pairs of shoes (Karhu sneakers and Sorel ankle Chelsea boots)
  • MINI CAPSULE: jumpsuit for dinner

This is so helpful, I tend to be a conservative dressy dresser.
I’m always embarrassed when I see Americans dressing without considering religions & culture.
We’ll be there for over two months & will have lots of visitors to our rental house.
Will be sending them all your newsletter.
    Muchas Gracias,

Heading to Europe this fall and already dreading the packing? 🍂

You check the forecast for every city. Paris says 68° and sunny, London says 52° and rain.

So you pack for all of it, and you end up checking the bag you swore you wouldn’t.

This is for you if you want to travel carry-on only but keep packing for every “what if.”

After 25 years of carry-on travel, this is how I pack for fall in Europe. I call it my 4-3-2-2-1 method:
4 tops
3 bottoms
2 mid-layers
2 outerwear pieces
1 dress
Twelve pieces that all work together, so you’re dressed for chilly mornings, rainy afternoons and dinner out from one carry-on.

Last fall I packed this way for 13 days from Paris to Porto, through sun, wind and one day of nonstop rain. I wore every piece more than once.

If your trip is coming up, start your capsule now. You’ll have time to shop for the one or two pieces you’re missing instead of panic-buying the week before you leave.

Comment FALL and I’ll send you:

Save this for your next trip, and tell me: what’s the hardest part of packing for fall?

✔️ Outfit links for this capsule, so you can shop the exact pieces

👝 PACK IT IN A POUCH | Mini Laundry Kit 🧺
If I’m packing fewer clothes, I need to be able to take care of them along the way.

Tucked inside my clothes-care pouch is a tiny laundry kit with detergent sheets, a braided clothesline + a sink stopper, everything I need to wash a few pieces in the sink and wear them again.

BONUS TIP: I also bring a small PackTowl. It doesn’t fit in the pouch, but after washing, I roll my wet clothes in it and squeeze out the excess water. It makes a BIG difference in how quickly they dry.

It’s a simple little system that makes a carry-on capsule so much more practical.
Comment LAUNDRY and I’ll send you links to everything I use for sink laundry + my outfit details from the video. 👇

Do you do sink laundry when you travel, or are you firmly on vacation from ALL laundry? 😂

Carry-on only can make a trip so much easier. But is it actually the right choice for your trip? Before you start trying to squeeze everything into a smaller suitcase, there are a few things worth figuring out first. I made the Travelista Trip Test to help you decide and if the answer is yes, you’ll also get my packing template so you know exactly how to start building your carry-on wardrobe. Comment CARRYON and I’ll send it to you. And tell me: what’s the hardest part of packing carry-on only for you?
Choosing what to leave behind? Shoes? Making enough outfits? Or just trusting that you packed enough?

French-girl fall, four pieces, 14 ways. 🇫🇷🍂
I started with four Quince pieces I’d actually want in a fall travel wardrobe and kept restyling them: wide-leg jeans, a striped button-down, red cashmere and a classic trench.

Tucked, untucked, layered, tied at the waist, sweater over the shoulders…same four pieces, completely different feel.

And that red cashmere? Definitely the piece that makes the whole thing. ❤️

Paid partnership with @onequince #QuincePartner

I’ve linked all four pieces in my LTK Shop so you can shop them directly there. https://liketk.it/6n8ad

Or comment “FRENCH” and I’ll send you the links to all four pieces.

👝 PACK IT IN A POUCH | The Tech Pouch 🔌
Nothing ruins a travel day faster than realizing the cord or adapter you need is somewhere at the bottom of your bag…or still at home. 😬
My tech pouch gives every cord, charger and tiny tech essential ONE home. Before every trip, I go through it, remove the duplicates and make sure every device I’m bringing has a charging plan.

Want to build yours? Comment TECH and I’ll send you my Travel Tech Pouch checklist + links to the tech essentials I pack. 🔌

Save this for your next trip and tell me the tech item you ALWAYS forget.

👝 PACK IT IN A POUCH | Wellness
This is the part of my pouch that’s less about first aid and more about feeling good while I travel.

Electrolytes, probiotics, ginger chews, anti-bloat products, vitamins, Lactaid and a few other things I’ve learned are worth having with me.

The goal isn’t to pack everything. It’s to build a wellness pouch around what you actually use and need when you travel.

Want to build yours? Comment POUCH and I’ll send you my Wellness Pouch Planner + Amazon links to the wellness items I pack.

👝 PACK IT IN A POUCH | First Aid

Don’t buy a pre-made travel first-aid kit. Build one around you and what you’re actually likely to need.

Mine has evolved after years of travel and a few lessons learned the hard way: Stomach issues in Oaxaca, painful sinus pressure on a flight, blisters from long walking days and even a stye on one trip. 😬

And you don’t need a fancy organizer. A Ziploc bag works just fine. The goal is to have the things you might need when you’re away from home.

Want to build your own? Comment POUCH and I’ll send you my First Aid planner + links to the first-aid essentials I pack.

Save this for your next trip and tell me what’s in your first-aid pouch that I’m missing. 👇

No more digging through your personal item at 35,000 feet.
Everything I want during the flight lives in one small pouch, from takeoff to landing. (I forgot to mention in the video the oh so important lip balm!). It’s one of those tiny travel systems that makes a big difference.

This is the first in my 👝Pack It in a Pouch✈️ series, where I’m breaking down my personal pouch system for travel, one pouch at a time.
Do you use an in-flight pouch? Tell me what goes in yours! 👝✈️

Save this for your next trip and follow along because next up in Pack It in a Pouch: the tech pouch. 🔌
