This list is a rough guideline which you should tweak and customize to fit your own needs. DO NOT bring everything on this list; you’ll be guilty of overpacking. Remember it’s the little things that add up so cut corners where possible and look for things that do double duty.

Before your departure date it’s best to check the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website for any changes in carry on guidelines. Currently (as of 9/26/06) liquid or gel based toiletries must be placed in a single, clear, quart size, zip top bag. Place anything liquid, gel, or aerosol based in a 3 oz. container or smaller. In addition to keeping us safer these guidelines also force us to cut down on the amount of toiletries we bring. The actual container has to measure 3 oz. or less, that means for instance you can’t roll up a tube of toothpaste in to a 3 oz. size, the container itself must be no larger than 3 oz. Check with TSA for exceptions, such as breast milk, formula, and prescription medication.
